Did you know that the concentration of flavor in herbs is dependent upon the time of day and the season they are harvested? Did you also know that summer is the peak time for flavor in the leaves of herbs? Why not make 2016 the summer to discover for yourself the flavor and joy of growing and using your own herbs? Our 2016 summer workshop schedule is full of exciting and innovative herbal ideas. We have herbal projects for all skill levels; from the beginner to the herbal expert. Participants will learn how to plant and cook with herbs, how to create beautiful decorations and even how to utilize the properties of herbs around the house. This year, we are also offering garden celebrations and free informative workshops to help save the Monarch butterfly populations. In addition, our shop features hand-made herbal soaps, therapeudic herbal pillows, herb plants, seeds, gifts, flavors from the garden and more. 2016 Summer Workshop Schedule
-Saturday, June 11th, 2:00 pm, Gardening for the Monarchs. Monarch butterflies are in danger of becoming extinct. This free workshop will outline some of the simple ways that home gardeners can help. We will also introduce the Milkweed plant that is necessary for the Monarch’s survival and provide free seeds. Get involved by raising awareness and bring along your friends and family members. ****FREE
-Saturday, June 18th, 2:00 pm, Cooking on the Grill for Dad (with Herbs). Father’s Day is celebrated this year on Sunday, June 19th. This workshop will focus on herbs and seasonings that will enhance Dad’s favorite dishes on the grill. Each participant will create a dried seasoning mix and marinade and will be introduced to additional herbs and techniques to make future grilling more flavorful. $10.00
-Saturday, June 25th, 2:00 pm, Everlastings for an Unforgettable Impression. This workshop will focus on utilizing fresh and dried herbs and everlastings to create a decorative centerpiece for a summer celebration. Each participant will also learn how easy it can be to utilize simple techniques to create unforgettable herbal and floral decorations for any garden or indoor get-together. $15.00
-Saturday, July 9th, 2:00 pm, A Garden Party. Join us for a Garden Party to celebrate America’s birthday. This celebration will be held at 1482 Turkey Farm Road, in our Wildlife Habitat Gardens (weather permitting). The menu will feature turkey breast and basil submarine sandwiches, herbal potato salad, watermelon and herbal-flavored ice (slush) and berry and herb shortcake. Each guest is asked to bring a plant for a plant swap. $7.00
-Saturday, July 16th, 2:00 pm, Herbal Insect Repellents for People and Pets. This workshop will focus on those herbs that have natural insect-repelling properties. Each participant will create a mosquito spray and will be introduced to various herbs that can help to control outside pests for people and pets. $10.00
-Saturday, July 23rd, 2:00 pm, Making Basil Pesto and Herb Crackers. Basil pesto is a favorite of herb growers everywhere. This workshop will introduce this herb garden classic created from several different types of basil. Participants will have the opportunity to create their own pesto and herb crackers to take home and bake. We will also introduce several additional recipes featuring basil as the main ingredient. $10.00
-Saturday, July 30th, 2:00 pm, Lavender Wands. Lavender wands are an old-fashioned way of preserving the favored scent of lavender in a way that is unusual and unique. Individual stalks of lavender are woven and twisted with ribbon while fresh to make a small wand. This workshop will introduce this time-honored tradition and will give each participant an opportunity to create their own lavender wand. A great idea for anyone who loves lavender! $15.00
-Saturday, August 6th, 2:00 pm, Making Herbal Jellies and Jams. Herbal jellies and jams are a perfect way to preserve and experiment with the flavor of herbs. Participants of this workshop will be introduced to the art of making herbal jelly and jam and will have the opportunity to create their own sample to enjoy at home. Additional recipes will also be provided. $10.00
-Saturday, August 20th, 11:00 am to 5:00 pm, Natural food/herb shop outing. Have you ever wondered what herb or natural food businesses are located in and around central Illinois? This outing will provide the opportunity to begin to answer this question. We will leave The Simple Heart of Life around 11:00 am and will travel to Quincy, Illinois to check out several herbs shops located there, stopping for lunch along the way. Don’t miss this chance to explore and share the discovery of other herb businesses in the area! $5.00
Please Note: Your check/payment reserves your seat for our workshops. Payment can be made at time of workshop if arrangements are made in advance. If cancellation occurs, we will gladly refund your payment, give you a kit to make the item, or if it’s a demonstration, all of the handouts. A substitute can also be sent to fill your seat if arranged with management in advance.

* Weather-related cancellations will be posted on The Simple Heart of Life’s Facebook page on the day of the workshops. If in doubt about cancellation, feel free to call 217-248-1508. We will re-schedule cancelled workshops at a later date if at all possible.
* Advance registration is not necessary for special celebrations but refreshments and favors will be provided on a first-come, first-served basis.
